Here is an interesting article from the July 17th issue of The Guardian. It talks about the possible relationship between climate change and the bioluminescent bay.
The author quotes Dr Michael Latz, a researcher with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and one of the scientists that has been working with the VCHT for several years now.
In 2011, the VCHT sponsored a study with Dr. Latz on Puerto Mosquito that is about to be published by Dr Latz and Mark Martin Bras. At the request of the VCHT, Dr Latz returned to Vieques in May to collect and analyze samples and to help develop possible research programs.
During this period of decreased bioluminescence the VCHT joined efforts with the Dr. Miguel Sastre of the University of Puerto Rico- Humacao campus and the for a short term study of Puerto Mosquito sponsored by the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources of Puerto Rico. This study included dinoflagellate counts, water quality parameters and other observations. The VCHT also served as support for the USGS and the Puerto Rico Environmental Quality Board during their sampling visits to Puerto Mosquito. We will share the results of these studies as soon as available.
What we can report on is the apparent recovery of bioluminescence in the Bay. It has been glowing beautifully during the past weeks. During this current period of apparent recovery the VCHT has been collecting samples to be analyzed by Dr. Latz, who has been informed of the spectacular bioluminescence that has been observed recently.
Mark Martin has also assisted Brenda Soler from the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez during her visits to Vieques. She is about to publish a paper on climate change and bioluminescent bays. We will post it as soon as it goes public.

En 2011, el FCHV auspició un estudio con el Dr. Latz en Puerto Mosquito. Este estudio se publicará muy pronto por el Dr. Latz y Mark Martin Bras. A petición del FCHV, el Dr. Latz regresó a Vieques en mayo para tomar muestras para análisis a la vez que para contribuir al desarrollo de posibles programas de investigación.
Duriante este período de disminicuón de la bioluminescencia el FCHV participó en un estudio a corto plazo en Puerto Mosquito conjuntamente con el Dr. Miguel Sastre de la Universidad de Puerto Rico, Recinto de Humacao auspiciado por el Departamento de Recursos Naturales y Ambientales. El estudio incluyó conteo de dinoflagelados, parámetros de calidad de agua y otras observaciones. El FCHV también proveyó apoyo al Servicio Geológico Federal y la Junta de Calidad Ambiental durante sus muestreos en Puerto Mosquito. Compartiremos los resultados de los estudios tan pronto estos estén disponibles.
Lo que sí podemos informar es sobre la aparente recuperación de la bioluminiscencia en la Bahía, que ha estado hermosa durante las últimas semanas. El FCHV ha estado tomando muestras durante este período de aparente recuperación para que el Dr. Latz, quien ha sido informado de la espectacular bioluminiscencia observada recientemente, las analice.
