Although you will hear advice not to take the ferry, 99% of the time the ferry will get you to Vieques with delays under an hour. You should buy your ticket about an hour before the boat departs and be prepared that it could leave late. The boat takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes to get to Vieques, depending on which boat you are on. One way fare is $2.00. If you have doubts, I am available to advise you about the current situation on the ferry service (787-565-2717). Read this thoroughly if you are planning to take the ferry.
Passenger/Cargo Ferry Schedule
- Departs Vieques: 6:00 am (6:30 am weekends and holidays), 11:00 am, 3:00 pm, 6:30 pm
- Departs Fajardo: 4:00 am (M-F), 9:00 am, 1:00 pm, 4:45 pm, 8:15 pm
You might find tickets in advance, but this is not necessary. Sometimes on summer weekend mornings tickets leaving Fajardo can sell out. Residents are given preference in this case. Again, this very rarely happens. Casa de Kathy prefers you to check in before 8 PM. Please avoid taking the 8:15 PM boat because it can arrive in Vieques after 10:30 PM and ground transportation at that time can be difficult. Car rental companies do not allow rental cars to be taken on the ferry AND it is difficult to get a car reservation.
The Maritime Transportation Authority (ATM in Spanish) rarely answers their phone. You must go in person to make reservations or to buy tickets. ATM Reservations: 787-494-0934 (do not select any extension, just wait on line) or write to the reservation manager Glenda at email@example.com. My opinion is that reservations are not necessary.
Ground Transportation to Casa de Kathy: There are public vans (carros publicos in Spanish) waiting at the dock or airport in Vieques to take you to my place. The fare is $3 per person to Esperanza or $9-10 for two people if you hire the van to take you directly with no other passengers. An additional 50 cents per bag may be charged. Tell your driver you are going to Casa de Kathy in Esperanza. The address is 367 Bromelias Street and says “Casa de Kathy” on the front of the house. My house is turquoise green with yellow trim. Flying as an Alternative: An alternative is to fly from the Ceiba airport for $35.00 one way (8 minutes), SJ International Airport for about $130.00 (20 minutes), or the Isla Grande airport in San Juan for about $75.00 (30 minutes). The last flights leaving from Ceiba and Isla Grande are about 5:00/5:30 PM. Click here for flight info.
Transportation to the Fajardo dock from San Juan:
Travel with Ilca Rivera ~ 787-644-3091 /firstname.lastname@example.org. Ilca’s shuttle service will take you from San Juan International Airport (or anywhere in San Juan) and bring you to Fajardo to get the ferry boat. Call Ilca, who is bi-lingual, and will take away all your worries about the commute to Vieques. Please tell her I referred you. They are willing to take calls almost anytime of the day or night.
Ilca’s charges for the trip from San Juan International Airport to Fajardo ferry dock: 1-3 people = $70.00, 4-6 people = $80.00 (ask about price for more people). An extra $5.00 is charged to go to the Ceiba airport. If you decide to take a taxi waiting at the curb at the airport, the price will be about $90 per couple and $2 per bag. The ride from the San Juan airport to the Fajardo ferry dock takes about an hour and ten minutes depending on the traffic.
Rivera’s drivers are willing to stop on the way if you want to eat something and sometimes will take you on the scenic route (along the coast). Travel with Padin can also take you from Fajardo back to the San Juan airport or to a San Juan hotel.
